Undermount Soft Close Drawer Slides System

What is Undermount Drawer Slides?

Undermount drawer glides are drawer glides that are located under the drawer box. They provide more support than sidemount drawer glides.
Undermount drawer glides are pieces of hardware that are found beneath the box of the drawer. They allow the drawer to easily slide open and close. Undermount drawer glides hold more weight and provide more support than drawer glides that are located on the sides of the drawer box. Undermount drawer glides can be found in several lengths so that homeowners can fit them to their specific cabinet depths. Full-extension undermount drawer glides allow the drawers to be opened completely so that the back of the drawer can be reached. The glides are also available so that they drawers only open partially, which many homeowners who have young children prefer.

Full Drawer Extension for Easy Access:
Undermount slides allow drawers to extend fully, providing easy access to the contents. This feature ensures that nothing gets lost or forgotten in the depths of the drawer, making them perfect for kitchen cabinets, where every inch of space matters.

Space-Saving Design:
Undermount slides do not take up any extra space within the cabinet, making them an ideal choice when maximizing storage space is a priority. This is especially beneficial in kitchens, where every inch of cabinet space counts.

The Trend of Using Undermount Drawer Slides

Drawer slides are accessories that help create a smooth movement for the drawers, helping users to open / close the cabinet simply & gently. Drawer slides are divided side mount slides and under mount slides. Because of the increasing aesthetic requirements in furniture, the under mount slides are also preferred to use more than conventional slides.

Under mount slides are also divided into 2 types based on the maximum opening space of the drawer: ¾ opening and fully opening. Compared with other types of slides, under-mount slides are installed at the bottom of the drawer. When opening the drawer, you will not see the slides. So it does not affect the aesthetics of the cabinet. In addition, due to being installed at the bottom of the cabinet drawer, the under-mount slides have a higher load capacity and sag resistance compared to conventional slides.

Under mount slide are equipped with additional damper pistons that will help the drawer close automatically and smoothly. When the drawer is pushed to close, the resistance inside the air pipe also works in parallel, so the drawer closes slowly, avoid making noise. Therefore, the drawer is not bumped the cabinet edge, helping to improve the durability of the cabinet.

Before, ball bearing slides are used commonly because of the cheap price and quick installation. However, in recent year, the demand in aesthetics and utility of cabinet’s user is higher, under mount slides are widely used to replay the ball bearing slides. Contributing to the aesthetics, helping close cabinet smoothly, avoiding jammed/ derailment or making noise, under mount slides are especially safe to use, avoiding hand-holding in families with children.

Step By Step Process Of Installation Of Undermount Drawer Slides

Flip: Flip the drawer upside down to receive the drawer slides and position the drawer in a way so that the face of the drawer is opposite the body of the user. Put the left front of the mounting bracket of slides flat on the drawer bottom right in the upper left corner, on the front as well as the left side of the drawer box. Screw down the mounting bracket on the front and on the sides of the drawer with 4 mounting screws with a power drill having a screw tip. Repeat the same process with the right side of the front mounting bracket.

Measure Width: With the help of measurement tape measure down the width of the drawer slide assembly. After that put the tip of the tape all along the lower-left corner of the drawer, and then measure this distance all along at the top edge of the back of the drawer, and mark. Extend this mark all along the edge and down the face of the back of the drawer box.

Measure Distance: The user needs to measure the distance from the edge down to the drawer bottom. Transfer the measurement on the face of the drawer back on both the left as well as right sides. Then place the square all along the left edge on the drawer back, and then make a line that must be parallel to the bottom on across the back edge until this line meets the previously created line.

Cut Notches: With the help of a jigsaw cut out the 2 notches on the back of the drawer. It is important that the long edge of the notches must be flush with the bottom of the drawer.

Mark: Put the left-side drawer slide in the place in-between the front bracket and notch that is in the back of the drawer. Look for the pin that is on the back of the drawer slide, and make a mark on the drawer back for the pinhole location that is to be drilled. Also mark for the right-side pinhole.

Drill: Taka a drill and attach a 1/4-inch drill bit then drill a shallow hole to accommodate the pin at the 2 marked locations.

Level: Put a level on the opening for the drawer. If needed adjust the back edge of the level simply up or down until it is levelled, and then draw a pencil mark on the back of the carcase with the bottom edge of the level. Repeat the same on the right side of the carcass.

Measurement: Take a measurement of the left side of the carcase straight to the front side left edge of the drawer opening. After that, transfer this measurement on the back of the cabinet, make a mark right on the back of the carcase, this mark is for the inset position of the rear mounting bracket. Again repeat the same job for the right-side bracket.

Mounting Bracket: Place the left rear mounting bracket with the back of carcase and the bottom edge of the bracket must be aligned with the pencil mark and align the left edge of the bracket to the left pencil mark. With the help of mounting screws secure the bracket on the back of the carcase. Repeat for right-side.

Secure: Place the left side drawer slide in the carcase and then push the back of the slide on the tab of the mounting bracket. Secure the front left edge of the slide with the side of the drawer using a pair of mounting screws. Perform the same pattern for another side.

How to Choose Undermount vs. Side Mount Drawer Slides

Weight Rating

All drawer slides are rated for a specific weight load. Consider what you plan to store in the drawers and how much weight you need them to hold. Side mount options often have a higher weight capacity. However, you may find some undermount options suited to your application.

Functionality Requirements

Consider what level of functionality you need from your installation. Undermount slides provide full extension and are ideal for high-traffic and client-facing areas. Side mounts are suitable for heavy-duty applications where accessibility and quick installations are required.

Ease of Installation

Side mounts are quick and easy to install. Undermount slides are more complicated, requiring more time or money for outsourcing installation. Side mount slides may be a better option if you’re on a budget.

Budget

Undermount slides are often more expensive than other options, impacting project expenses. Side mounts are better for projects with high volume requirements and limited budgets.

Cabinet Size and Design

Your slide choice often depends on the design of the cabinet holding the drawers. Undermount slides are ideal for contemporary cabinets. Side mounts usually work better with more traditional cabinets. Compatibility is another essential consideration. Side mount slides are compatible with many different cabinet types, while undermount drawer slides have some limitations.

Aesthetics

When choosing a mount, your selection must often balance aesthetics, functionality and cost. Undermount drawer slides are practically invisible. They provide a seamless, noiseless, modern experience. Side mounts are functional, durable and practical. They’re often better suited to traditional aesthetics.

FAQ

Q: Why are undermount drawer slides better?

A: Undermount slides are mounted underneath the drawer, which makes them great for drawers that are too shallow to accommodate side- or bottom-mounted slides. They are more expensive than side- or bottom-mounted slides, but they offer a much smoother operation.

Q: What are the three types of drawer runner systems?

A: These include ball bearing drawer runners, bottom fix, push to open, and soft close drawer runners. Each type of drawer runner will give you a slightly different finish, so it is important to consider which is g.oing to be suitable for your project.

Q: 3What is the difference between a drawer glide and a drawer slide?

A: Ball bearing drawer slides are also known as rails, runners, and sliders, but they are not the same as glides. A glide uses thin rails on both mounting surfaces, and include plastic wheels on the drawer side allowing movement.

Q: What are the requirements for undermount drawer slides?

A: Undermount slides are ideal when horizontal space is limited because they typically only require 3/16" to 1/4" of space per slide. The other thing to note about under mount slides is that they require ½” of clearance above and below the drawer in the cabinet opening.

Q: How do I choose an undermount drawer slide?

A: Knowing the height and width of a drawer will be necessary when deciding how to choose undermount drawer slides. Measure properly to assure you get the right slides. A large, deep drawer will require a different undermount slide than your smallest drawer, for instance. Decide how you want the drawer to close.

Q: How much do you deduct for undermount drawer slides?

A: Opening Width - Deduct 3/8" total from opening width (3/16" from each side). Opening Height - Deduct 3/4" total from the opening height then round down to the closest 1/2" (As we sell drawer boxes in 1/2" heights only).

Q: How much weight can an undermount drawer slide hold?

A: Most drawer slides are rated for 75,100, or 150-pound loads. However, some ball-bearing slides can hold over 500-pound loads. Knowing how heavy a load the drawer will support can help filter out your choices.

Q: Why use undermount drawer slides?

A: Undermount Drawer Slides offer a sleek, contemporary appearance with concealed hardware, smooth and silent operation, full drawer extension, and increased weight capacity. They are well-suited for modern designs, kitchens, and projects where aesthetics and premium performance are paramount.

Q: Are undermount slides better than side mount?

A: They are also more durable than side-mount drawer slides and can accommodate heavier loads. Since the drawer sits directly on the slide, under-mount drawer slides offer better stability and less side-to-side movement.

Q: How to determine undermount drawer slide length?

A: Extend your measuring tape from the drawer's front edge to the back. This is crucial because your new slides must match this length for a smooth operation. Jot this number down for reference. Pro tip: Undermount slides should be slightly shorter than the drawer depth to fit correctly.

Q: Can drawer slides be mounted underneath?

A: If you have a very wide drawer, especially if it has a substantial load, there is a risk of lateral movement. By flat mounting Drawer Slides underneath as well as using conventional Drawer Slides you can make the drawer more stable.

Q: What is an undermount drawer slide?

A: Undermount drawer glides are pieces of hardware that are found beneath the box of the drawer. They allow the drawer to easily slide open and close. Undermount drawer glides hold more weight and provide more support than drawer glides that are located on the sides of the drawer box.

Q: How do you separate undermount drawer slides?

A: The friction method is the simplest to disconnect. Pull the drawer far enough to separate it from the cabinet, and the adjoined slide members will disconnect. Expect some resistance from the ball retainers at the end, but that is by design.

Q: What is the difference between undermount and bottom mount drawer slides?

A: Bottom mount slides may offer either partial or full extension, depending on the design. Both undermount and bottom mount drawer slides are integral to the functioning of drawers, but they differ in several key aspects, including installation location, access to drawer contents, weight capacity, and aesthetics.

Q: How to determine undermount drawer slide length?

Q: Which is better undermount or drop in?

A: In conclusion, when deciding between an undermount or drop-in sink, it ultimately comes down to personal preference and the specific needs of your kitchen or bathroom. Undermount sinks offer a seamless and sophisticated look, while drop-in sinks provide versatility and easy installation.

Q: Why use undermount drawer slides?
